CCW: Missourians in Kansas (and beyond)

I don’t know how many times I have asked myself, and others have asked me … Can I, a Missouri Resident, Carry Concealed in the State of Kansas? The reason this is asked is because I am one of those people who live right by the State Line in Kansas City. I travel back and forth regularly between Missouri and Kansas. I am also one of those people who carries in Missouri under the permitless carry conceal law. I do not have an actual CCW permit. So, the question for me in somewhat important. Well I once again looked into it and thank to Google AI, the following answer appeared:

Yes, a person from Missouri can carry a concealed handgun in Kansas because Kansas honors out-of-state concealed carry permits and is also a constitutional carry state, meaning residents and non-residents who can legally possess a firearm can carry without a permit, though age restrictions (usually 21+) and prohibited location laws still apply. Missouri’s permit is recognized in Kansas, and Missouri residents can also rely on Kansas’s permitless carry law as long as they meet the state’s requirements, notes the Attorney General of KSVedder Holsters, and NRA-ILA, respectively.

Key Points for Missourians in Kansas:

  • Permit Recognition: Kansas recognizes valid concealed carry permits from Missouri.
  • Constitutional Carry: Kansas allows anyone legally allowed to own a gun (generally 21+) to carry concealed without a permit, even if they are a non-resident.
  • Age: Be aware that while Missouri allows permitless carry at 18, Kansas generally requires individuals to be 21 to carry without a permit, though age 18+ can transport unloaded in a vehicle, say Giffords.
  • Prohibited Places: Always check Kansas laws for locations where firearms are prohibited (e.g., government buildings, polling places, etc.).

In summary, a Missouri resident with a permit, or even without one (if they meet Kansas age requirements), can generally carry concealed in Kansas.  (source: Google AI)

So, while there are restrictions on where a person can carry a concealed weapon, it is my understanding that I can carry a concealed weapon in the State of Kansas. But before you go wandering across the State line into Kansas, you need to take a moment and do your own homework. I am not a lawyer. I am not going to tell you that you can carry a gun anywhere or any time. I am telling you what I have found for myself, what I base my decission on regarding the legality of carrying a concealed weapon, or open carrying my firearm. Do your own homework, make your own decission on what you can legally do.

Permitless Carry Conceal States:

Again, falling back on Google AI, there are 29 states that allow “permitless” carry concealed. Those states are:

AlabamaAlaskaArizonaArkansas
FloridaGeorgiaIdahoIndiana
IowaKansasKentuckyLouisiana
MaineMississippiMissouriMontana
NebraskaNew HanpshireNorth DakotaOhio
OklahomaSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennessee
TexasUtahVermontWest Virginia
Wyoming

Important Considerations

  • Age Restrictions: Most states have minimum age requirements, commonly 18 or 21, to carry without a permit.
  • Legal Eligibility: Permitless carry only applies to individuals who are not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm under state and federal law (e.g., due to felony convictions).
  • Specific Locations: Even in permitless carry states, there are typically restricted locations where firearms are prohibited, such as schools, government buildings with security, and private property with proper signage.
  • Non-Resident Status: While many states extend permitless carry to non-residents, some originally had restrictions for residents only, so it is crucial to check the specific laws of each state before carrying.
